Joe joined Dale in June 2010 from Grimsby to fill the void at left-back following Tom Kennedy's departure for Leicester.
Aged 22, Joe is a former West Ham youngster who had been with the Mariners for the whole of last season after a successful loan spell the year before.
Joe spent time on loan at Rotherham in 2007/08 and man-marked David Beckham when playing against the MLS All-Stars for the Hammers two years ago.
